Ole, the artist's son (b. 1953)

This portrait is carved from a stone which the sculptor came across during a summer sojourn in the Husby parsonage in Funen in 1955. The sculpture is carved directly into the stone without a preliminary clay study. The large hand supporting the head of the child has a practical function. As it allows the sculptor to carve deep into the area under the chin it creates a contrast between the delicate neck and the large head, a feature common to children. By omitting to carve the surface of the hand in detail, it does not draw attention to itself, thus our attention is focussed on the face.
