Teacher Jakobína Jakobsdóttir (1877 - 1960)

Jakobína Jakobsdóttir came from a respected family in the North of Iceland. She graduated from Teacher Training College in Reykjavík in 1897 and worked for a number of years as a teacher in Denmark and Norway before moving to the small town of Eyrarbakki in the South of Iceland in 1918, to be near members of her family. There she worked as one of three teachers in the town's elementary school until 1931, where Sigurjón Ólafsson was one of her pupils from 1919 to 1923. Much like the Artist's mother the sitter is wearing the Icelandic national costume, including the small velvet cap with its silk tassel and golden brooch; notice also the crossed braids extending down her back and fastened with hairpins under the cap.
