Director Einar Sigurðsson (1906 - 1977)

Einar Sigurðsson came from the Westman Islands. Following his commercial studies he became one of the leading lights of the Icelandic fishing industry with his modern trawler fleet and fish processing plants, based in the Westman Islands which happen to be close to the country's richest fishing grounds. Sigurðsson had keen political as well as cultural interests, was for awhile a member of the Parliament and active in local politics. He also created a library for his employees in the Westman Islands. From 1962 onwards he was a regular visitor to Sigurjón Ólafsson's studio, assisted him financially and followed his work with great interest. He was able to secure commissions for the artist, both within his own family circle and elsewhere; among other things he commissioned portraits of himself and his wife, Svava Ágústsdóttir, as well as their ten children.
