Chief surgeon Guðmundur Thoroddsen (1887 - 1968)

Like so many of his compatriots Guðmundur Thoroddsen completed his medical studies in Denmark, where he resided until 1920. In the following years he also studied in Norway, Sweden, England, France and Germany. He became professor of surgery at the University of Iceland in 1924 and chief surgeon at the Icelandic State Hospital (Landsspítalinn) from the time it was opened in 1930. Guðmundur Thoroddsen was highly respected both in his homeland and abroad.
